Software (freeware)

AERODYNAMICS / GASDYNAMICS

  1. AVL is a program for the aerodynamic and flight-dynamic analysis of rigid aircraft of arbitrary configuration. It employs an extended vortex lattice model for the lifting surfaces, together with a slender-body model for fuselages and nacelles. General nonlinear flight states can be specified. The flight dynamic analysis combines a full linearization of the aerodynamic model about any flight state, together with specified mass properties.
  2. XFOIL is an interactive program for the design and analysis of subsonic isolated airfoils.
  3. Potto-GDC (Gas Dynamics Calculator) with accompanying book.

CFD  (Computational Fluid Dynamics)

  1. The OpenFOAM® (Open Field Operation and Manipulation) CFD Toolbox can simulate anything from complex fluid flows involving chemical reactions, turbulence and heat transfer, to solid dynamics, electromagnetics and the pricing of financial options. OpenFOAM is produced by OpenCFD Ltd and is freely available and open source, licensed under the GNU General Public Licence.
  2. Elmer : Open Source Finite Element Software for Multiphysical Problems.
  3. Collection of Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) source codes, freely downloadable and intended to be useful for educational purposes.
  4. fosite is a gerneric framework for the numerical solution of 2D hyperbolic conservation laws in generalized orthogonal coordinates. It is mainly intended for CFD problems with rotational symmetry.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

  1. Adventure Project: A free release of Adventure (ADVanced ENgineering analysis Tool for Ultra large REal world) system.
  1. GNU Octave is a high-level language, primarily intended for numerical computations. It provides a convenient command line interface for solving linear and nonlinear problems numerically, and for performing other numerical experiments using a language that is mostly compatible with Matlab. It may also be used as a batch-oriented language.
  2. FreeMat: A free environment for rapid engineering and scientific prototyping and data processing. It is similar to commercial systems such as MATLAB from Mathworks, and IDL from Research Systems, but is Open Source. FreeMat is available under the GPL license.
  3. deal.II: A Finite Element Differential Equations Analysis Library
  4. FFTW: A C subroutine library for computing the discrete Fourier transform (DFT)
  5. ParMETIS : Parallel Graph Partitioning and Fill-reducing Matrix Ordering
  6. NAS Parallel Benchmarks
  7. HippoDraw: A powerful object oriented statistical data analysis package
  8. LabPlot : Data analysis and visualisation
  9. SciGraphica: Scientific application for data analysis and technical graphics
  10. GraphCalc : Graph calculator
  11. Veusz: A scientific plotting and graphing package
  12. Scilab: Open source platform for numerical computation
  13. The R Project for Statistical Computing

Text creation and manipulation

  1. LaTeX Project: A document preparation system. LaTeX is a high-quality typesetting system; it includes features designed for the production of technical and scientific documentation. LaTeX is the de facto standard for the communication and publication of scientific documents.
