TU-01: Centrifugal Fan Study Unit

The unit allows to perform basic experiments on a common centrifugal fan for industrial use. The unit is equipped with a data acquisition system along with software for Windows.

The fan can operate using three different types of wheels (forward curved, radial and backward curved blades). This allows to compare the experimental results obtained using the three wheels.

Centrifugal Fan Study Unit

TU-02: Axial Fan Study Unit

The unit allows studies to be carried out in order to obtain the characteristics of an industrial-type axial fan. The unit is equipped with a data acquisition system along with software for Windows. A Venturi tube, a Pitot tube and two micromanometers allow the fan operating characteristics to be measured.

FM-01: Basic Hydraulics Bench with accessories

The unit is a portable and self-contained service module for the range of accessories. The bench is constructed from lightweight corrosion resistant plastic and is mounted on wheels for mobility. The bench top incorporates an open channel with side channels to support the accessory on test.Volumetric measurement is integral and has been chosen in preference to other methods of flow measurement for its ease of use, accuracy and safety in use (no heavy weights for students to drop). The volumetric measuring tank is stepped to accommodate low or high flow rates. A stilling baffle reduces turbulence and a remote sight tube with scale gives an instantaneous indication of water level. A measuring cylinder is included in the supply for measurement of very small flow rates.

A dump valve in the base of the volumetric tank is operated by a remote actuator. Opening the dump valve returns the measured volume of water to the sump in the base of the bench for recycling. An overflow in the volumetric tank avoids flooding. Water is drawn from the sump tank by a centrifugal pump and a panel mounted control valve regulates the flow.

An easy-to-use quick release pipe connector situated in the bench top allows for the rapid exchange of accessories without the need for hand tools. Each accessory is supplied as a complete piece of equipment needing no additional service items other than the Hydraulics Bench. When coupled to the bench they are immediately ready for use.

Impact of a Jet: The equipment allows the force developed by a jet of water impinging upon a stationary object to be measured. The force exerted on different targets can be compared with the forces predicted by momentum theory.

Energy Losses in Bends and Fittings: The accessory permits losses in different bends, a sudden contraction, sudden enlargement and a typical control valve to be demonstrated. The losses in the devices related to flow rate are measured and the loss coefficients related to velocity head are calculated and compared.

Flow over Weirs: Two weir plates of different shape are provided allowing familiarisation and comparison with theory. The demonstration capabilities of the accessory are: a)demonstrating the characteristics of flow over a rectangular notch, b) demonstrating the characteristics of flow over a vee notch and c) determining the coefficient of discharge

Hot wire anemometer

The Multichannel CTA offers an efficient and affordable solution for mapping of velocity and turbulence fields in most air flows. Up to 16 points can be monitored simultaneously, reducing or eliminating probe traverse. This means reduced experimental time and lower costs.

Two frames can be combined to cover up to 16 measuring points simultaneously. The Multichannel CTA system can be used with all Dantec Dynamics standard miniature hot-wire probes without the need for any internal adjustments performed by the user. The decade resistance and the CTA servo-loop have been optimised for this probe type at the factory, and they can thus be switched into Operate without further notice.
